Clark County Department of Family Services (DFS):
The DFS is the child welfare agency for Clark County. Currently, there are more than 3800 children in protective custody. Many of our children have special health care needs that range from mild to extremely complex. Some of these children require foster parents and caregivers who are properly trained to understand, assist, and care for these children and their medical conditions.
There is an ongoing need for foster families to provide both short-term foster care as well as to adopt children who need permanent families. DFS is available to provide training for individuals or families who are Clark County Medical Society (CCMS) members to become licensed foster, respite, or adoptive caregivers.
Members of the CCMS can also help the children of Clark County by providing short term respite services to medically complex children when foster families need relief by coming to the foster families' homes to care for children for a few hours at a time.
Another way that medical professionals can help or assist is by volunteering as a guest speaker at foster parent trainings and presenting on topics that include preventing chronic illness such as diabetes, asthma, allergies. etc.
The licensing process including all trainings are free to foster parents. Attending an Orientation session is the first step. Orientation is offered several times per month. Registration is NOT required for Orientation. Please call 455-0181 to inquire about the next Orientation sessions.
For more information, please contact the Foster Parent Recruiter, Vickie Wilson at 455-0720 or the general information number at 702-455-0181. You may also learn more by visiting the website at www.fosterchild.com.childrensadvocasyalliance.com
Volunteers In Medicine of Southern Nevada (VMSN):
Volunteers in Medicine, Southern Nevada (VMSN) was established in 2008 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to find a way to provide access to health care to the medically underserved.
VMSN plans to use both active and retired health care professionals and lay people to run the centrally located clinic. They anticipate having 200 to 300 volunteers, who will be serving 25,000 to 50,000 patient visits annually. Their philosophy will be to create a “culture of caring.” The clinic will initially focus on primary care, pediatrics, prenatal care and social services. Additional services will be added in time.
VMSN needs volunteers with every kind of skill: medical, office, housekeeping, etc. Virtually every job will be performed by volunteers. Their hope is that you will find a few hours each week or month to volunteer.

The Shade Tree:
For over 18 years, The Shade Tree has sheltered homeless and abused women and children. All services are free and designed to meet the client's needs. Currently preventive healthcare is not available for many residents due to the cost involved. More than 3,600 women and children served annually are in need of health care, so a clinic will be opened in the shelter to solve this problem. On average, 38% of clients are children and under the age of eighteen and 87 expectant mothers were sheltered during the last year. Touro University has graciously extended their Schutz Engel Foundation grant to equip a clinic at The Shade Tree. The clinic will be open four days each week in a sick call mode addressing women's health, adult health, and children's health care every week.
Volunteer and referral physicians are needed in order to accomplish this partnership clinic with Touro University. The Shade Tree is the only shelter of its' kind in Nevada providing for the needs of women, children, and their pets on site. The campus is just north of downtown Las Vegas.
